Films: Tenebrae Unlocked

Music of the Spheres

This short concert features Judith Bingham’s The Drowned Lovers and, as a companion piece, Stanford’s much-loved setting of The Blue Bird – both from our Grammy-nominated album ‘Music of the Spheres’. We were delighted that mezzo-soprano Martha McLorinan was able to join us in the making of this film. An established solo performer, Martha is also one of Tenebrae’s most long-standing members, and many of our fans will recognise her in this impeccable performance.

The programme also includes two of Philip Moore’s Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Set to texts written while the theologian Bonhoeffer was interned in a Nazi prison camp, Moore’s settings capture the love, hope and faith which Bonhoeffer managed to cling onto throughout his ordeal. The soaring soprano line in the final movement (“Grant me a quiet night’s sleep beneath Thy tender care”) is surely one of the most beautiful moments you will ever hear.
