In these settings of the nine responsories for each of the three most solemn days of holy Week, Gesualdo uses his vivid madrigalian language to capture Christ’s passion with almost unbearable directness. Gesualdo writes such sustained and exquisite polyphony that we cannot possibly doubt either the seriousness of his intent or the full extent of his genius. This programme is complemented with music by another renaissance master, William Byrd.

This concert features a small ensemble of singers handpicked from the award-winning choir Tenebrae, focusing on repertoire originally conceived for consort performance. An exceptional group of musicians known for their combination of instinctive ensemble skills and masterful solo abilities, these singers demonstrate the vocal quality of the individuals who make up the trademark ‘Tenebrae’ sound whilst creating an intimate concert experience.
