Tallis and Byrd had to navigate carefully through the religious turmoil of Tudor England – achieving royal patronage while their fellow Catholics were being treated as enemies of the state.

400 years later, James MacMillan works with more freedom, combining his Catholic faith with a passionate interest in earthly politics. His responsories, full of energy and urgency, intersperse the works of his predecessors.
