Tenebrae celebrates the finest exponents of 20th century English choral music, in particular music by Ivor Gurney. Gurney’s association with the leading composers of the era was to begin in earnest at the Royal College of Music where Hubert Parry was Director and Charles Villiers Stanford taught him as well as Vaughan Williams and Howells – the latter becoming a lifelong friend and a particular champion of his music. Indeed Stanford thought that Gurney was the most promising of all that generation of composers. Gerald Finzi also worked tirelessly to promote Gurney’s music and poetry and this programme features one of the pieces recently brought to light, the motet for double choir Since I believe in God the Father Almighty alongside music by his contemporaries. There is also a new work by Judith Bingham: settings of Gurney’s poetry entitled A Walk with Ivor Gurney for mezzo soprano solo and choir.
