In this varied programme Tenebrae presents some of the finest choral works from the Renaissance through to the early twentieth century. The first half showcases Renaissance polyphony from across Europe, featuring music by the English master Thomas Tallis as well as works from Spain and Italy. A particular highlight is Gregorio Allegri’s haunting Miserere, mei Deus. Originally composed for the choir of the Sistine Chapel, it is famous for its stratospheric soprano part. The second half features the richer and more chromatic harmony of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The two Bruckner motets are well-loved by choirs the world over, and feature on Tenebrae’s award-winning album of Brahms and Bruckner motets. The concert concludes with Harris’ spectacular double-choir motet Faire is the Heaven.
