Join Tenebrae and Violinist Sarah Christian for an evening of Bach and Parry.
What used to be considered ‘simple’ church hymns are transformed by Bach into intense and moving art. Small rhythmic and melodic variations make these mostly four-part hymns some of the most deeply emotional work of this great composer. Who doesn’t remember, for example, the moments when they appear in Bach’s famous St Matthew and St John Passions? Here, these chorales are heard alternating with individual movements from his violin partitas. Influenced by Bach, Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell provide a beautiful contrast in this programme. These emotional and explosive songs were written shortly before his death, and were heavily influenced by his experiences of the First World War, during which several of his students died. We hope you can join us for this evening of poignancy and reflection.
