In an England where Catholic masses were forbidden, the Mass for Five Voices and the motet Infelix ego were allowed to be heard only in closed settings. The music speaks volumes: Byrd’s polyphony is always restrained but never neutral. Voices seek each other out, hold back, build tension without exploding.
