For the court of Elizabeth I, William Byrd wrote music that didn’t need to be hidden: hymns, Easter music, and excerpts from the Divine Office that followed the rhythm of Anglican religious practice. Yet this repertoire bears the same signature of clear counterpoint and controlled intensity. Byrd switches between intimacy and projection without ever sacrificing sharpness.
