Bachfest Leipzig

Posted on 1 June 2013

Festivals to honour Johann Sebastian Bach have been held in Leipzig since 1904, and this year Tenebrae join forces with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the direction of Trevor Pinnock for a performance on Bach’s Christmas Oratorio on 16 June. Taking place over ten days, the festival includes 115 events, and more than 65,000 audience members are expected to attend.

Just after the Leipzig performance of the Christmas oratorio around Christmas/New Year 1734-35, no one could have imagined how supremely important the work would become in concert schedules today. This work of Bach’s is regarded by many as the ultimate Christmas music, with its idyllic shepherd scenes and joyous choral movements.
