Finding Stillness in Sound
As both a musician and meditation teacher, I’ve spent years exploring the power of sound. Music, especially when infused with the intention of mindfulness, has the incredible ability to touch us on a deeply personal level, transcending the barriers of language and thought. That’s why I am so excited to be part of this unique concert experience with The Tenebrae Choir—a group known for their breathtaking vocal precision and emotional depth.
This performance isn’t just about listening; it’s about experiencing music as a gateway to meditation.
The Power of Music in Meditation
Meditation can often seem daunting. For many, sitting in silence with the mind’s chatter can feel impossible. But when music is involved, something magical happens. Music has a way of drawing us in, inviting us to focus and settle into the present moment without feeling forced. This is why music as meditation can be a powerful way to make the practice accessible, even to those who have never tried it before.
Sound and the Science of Stillness
Music’s impact on our mental state isn’t just poetic—it’s scientific. When we listen to music, our brains can enter different states of consciousness, particularly when the music is designed to facilitate relaxation. Brainwave states like alpha and theta are commonly associated with meditation, deep relaxation, and creativity. These states are characterised by slower brainwave patterns, which can be induced through listening to calming music.
Studies have shown that music can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s “rest and digest” response. This system helps to lower heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and promote overall relaxation (Thoma et al., 2013). These physiological changes go a long way to making meditation accessible through music as a vehicle.
One of the most beautiful aspects of music is its universal appeal. Nearly everyone has experienced the power of a song to shift their mood, evoke a memory, or provide solace in difficult times. Unlike traditional meditation, which might seem intimidating to some, music meets us where we are. It’s a gentle guide, helping us find focus without effort.
A Personal Reflection
As someone who straddles the worlds of music and meditation, I’ve often found that my most profound moments of stillness arise not from silence but from sound. I often recall concerts in which I’ve slipped into an altered state of consciousness, everyone in the room momentarily holding its collective breath. In that moment, it was as if time stopped, and every person in the audience was united in the experience of pure presence. It’s these moments that remind me of the transformative power of music.
The Tenebrae Choir’s concert is an invitation to explore these moments of presence. Whether you are a seasoned meditation practitioner, a lover of classical music, or simply curious about how sound can deepen your sense of calm, this experience offers something unique. It’s an opportunity to witness how music can act as a bridge, connecting us to a deeper awareness of ourselves and the world around us.
Join Us for a Meditative Musical Experience
This isn’t just another concert—it’s a chance to pause, breathe, and connect through the beauty of sound. Come with an open heart and let myself, alongside Tenebrae, guide you through an evening of meditative music. Let the harmony of voices draw you into a state of reflection and stillness, proving that meditation can be as simple as listening.
We look forward to sharing this special evening with you. Allow yourself to be moved, not just by the music but by the quiet moments in between.
