Tenebrae and BBCSO recording released – Symphonic Psalms and Prayers

Posted on 5 February 2018

Tenebrae’s latest recording with the BBC Symphony Orchestra is now available for purchase. This recording includes iconic works by American and American émigré composers: Bernstein, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Zemlinsky, highlighting the richness and variety of American twentieth-century music.

The Financial Times wrote:

“The is how the Symphony of Psalms always ought to sound – as flawless as a fine classical statue hewn out of marble, the sound glinting in its clarity, the elegance timeless in its beauty.”

BBC Music Magazine’s Terry Blain gave a 5-star review for the recording, adding of the Chichester Psalms:

“Countertenor David Allsopp displays beguiling poise and tonal purity in ‘The Lord is my shepherd’, while the Tenebrae singers contribute a precision-tooled ‘raging nations’ section to that movement. Short’s flowing tempo in the finale dilutes the danger of sentimentality, and the hushed coda is particularly captivating… these Tenebrae performances will reward repeated listening.”

Gramophone writes:

“There is an arresting immediacy to both performance and recording… What a sound!”
